What inspired you to work in PR?
I discovered PR a little bit late – it wasn’t until grad school. I was instantly into this idea of business strategy, creative ideation and heavy emphasis on writing.
How did you get started in PR?
My first PR job was managing the in-house PR and marketing department for an ecommerce jewelry brand. It was a huge learning experience to be put in a management role so quickly, but I loved it.
What is the best advice you’ve received about PR?
The idea that human beings have been using stories to explain the world has always felt very compelling to me. I like to think of PR as a form of storytelling, necessary and desired, to help us discover, understand and share information with one another.
What is a typical day like for you?
These days, it’s a mix of client work (I offer an intense brand strategy package with a quick turn-around time), working with my Prismadonna’s (I launched our first virtual course for aspiring publicists earlier this month), editing and promoting blog content, and working on the next evolution of PR Couture.
What is your favorite thing about working in PR?
When you’re in the business of communication, you’re essentially helping people, brands, whatever, more effectively express themselves. There’s nothing quite like the relief and excitement that comes from helping a client say what they have to say, to the people they need to say it to, in a way that is meaningful and drives results.
What’s your least favorite aspect of PR?
There’s no end! You aren’t building something finite, you’re growing over time – now that I am out of the agency world, there is something freeing about not being expected to outdo your last success over and over.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Being able to work as a consultant and serve other publicists through PR Couture is an ongoing highlight.
What is your dream PR job?
I think I might have had a bit too much entrepreneurial kool-aid to be able to consider at length the idea of working for someone else, but I would love to do more partnering on creative projects with brands and people I love and who inspire me.
What social media advice do you have for PR girls?
Stop having a private Instagram.
What is in store for you in 2015?
Big projects for me right now are the launch of PRISM, and doing that a few more times this year (we sold out in 2 days, doubled up and have a huge waiting list), our first virtual course, Fashion PR Con in NYC in March, a College of Extended Studies 2-day course on Fashion PR for SDSU in April, and something pretty big is happening to PR Couture, news about that should come out in June.
What goals do you have for 2015?
This is a big year of execution. My goals are to get shit done.
What advice do you have for aspiring PR girls?
Be intentional about the life you create. Stay when it’s good. Leave when it’s bad. Come hang out with us at PR Couture, and, in the words of Jennifer Lawrence:
