#FridayFive: Job Search Resources
Job (and internship) searching is hard. Looking for jobs takes forever, applying for jobs takes even longer. Then there’s waiting to hear back about your applications, following up with your applications, waiting to schedule interviews and then waiting back for an offer. No one realizes it, but looking and applying for jobs is a full-time job in itself! These are my top five sites to search for jobs.

#FridayFive: Twitter Chats for PRos
Twitter chats are a great networking tools & they’re fun too! For those who don’t know, a Twitter chat is a conversation held at a specific time on Twitter, usually moderated by a single account & easily marked by a hashtag. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of Twitter chats going on weekly or monthly. That, in addition to the sheer volume of tweets flying around, it’s easy to get overwhelmed! Here are my top five Twitter chats for PR pros. Five Twitter Chats for PR pros #NPPRSA Hosted by PRSA’s New Professionals Section, this chat focuses on all things important to new PR pros. The Social Media Sweep
So Winter Storm Juno may have been a bust for much of the East Coast this week, but hopefully everyone put that unnecessary snow day to good use by getting a jump on applying for few summer internships or after-graduation jobs. Let’s be serious, most of us spent that glorious bit of a break how we spend nearly any other snowy free day – hanging out on the couch in our pjs watching Netflix. It’s ok! It’s not too late to get everything in order and get those applications submitted. But first, clean up your online presence. It’s been drilled into our heads that future employers will scour the dark corners…

Becoming a Morning Person
I’ll be the first to admit, I have never been a morning person. I’ve always worked really well late at night and it usually takes me a good half hour to come close to resembling a human being in the morning. Until recently. Maybe because it’s winter, maybe because I’m getting older, but I’ve been much more tired after 5 p.m., even if I got a full eight hours the night before. I’ve tried everything I can think of – changing my diet, being more organized, exercising, going to bed earlier- and I’ve only found one thing that seems to work for me – trying to convince myself I’m a…

To Write or Not to Write: The PR Question
Lately I’ve seen a lot of debate over whether or not PR majors should be required to take advanced writing courses, sparked by Shannon Bowen, a professor of PR ethics at the University of South Carolina, in a recent column on PR Week. I have to respectfully disagree, Ms. Bowen. Knowing how to write well is a core competency for PR. While I agree with her on the fact that PR has evolved and that if you can’t write, PR is not the career for you, I disagree with the claim that everything that needs to be taught about writing for PR can be taught in 10 minutes.

The internet is great, with its unlimited resources, endless entertainment and ample answers. The Post-Grad Struggle
Is struggling in your career a completely normal, run-of-the-mill thing? I hate to even admit this, being a Type A person, but lately I’ve been feeling a bit like I’m struggling at work. It’s a mix of “Argh! I don’t know what I’m doing!” and “Why won’t you let me do my job!” served up with a huge side of anxiety about life in general. While I don’t like admitting that I feel a little overwhelmed and a bit lost, I feel that opening up about it is a good way to figure it out, especially since I know I’m not alone in it. I like to think of it as…

Confessions of a Chronic Procrastinator
Confession: I’m a chronic procrastinator. It’s a serious problem. Sometimes I wish there were meetings I could attend where I could connect with other procrastinators to support each other as we struggle with our incessant need to delay everything. I realize that I’d probably try to find a way to delay that, too, though. I blame it in part on my background in journalism. Working under pressure and on deadline is like second nature to me, so when I don’t have a deadline lighting a fire under me, I don’t tend to feel any particular need to get things done.

PR Girl 101: Design Your Day
Is it just me or is the Monday after a long week just the worst? Whether you’re still recovering from a tryptophan-induced coma or coming down from a shopping-fueled high, today – and the next few weeks – are shaping up to be a rough uphill battle. For PR girls, it’s important to always be on top of things – one of the most difficult things when you can’t quite get yourself motivated. My preferred way to combat an insanely busy, struggle-filled period of time is head on. By head on, I mean meticulously planning & scheduling every little thing I have to do between my start and finish lines. But,…

PR Girl 101: Prep for a Successful Week
Let’s be honest: PR girls rarely have a boring week. Whether it’s a project coming together for a client, a full schedule of events or a pitching to new clients day in and day out, there’s always something to do. Even though we know that a full schedule is really just part of the job description, we still find ourselves surprised once in a while when a crazy, hectic, stressful week pops up. Sometimes an uncontrollable crisis is truly a surprise – springing from unforeseen circumstances or things beyond our control – but more often than not, it’s of our own doing. We fail to plan, we get overwhelmed, we procrastinate,…
