  • The Friday Five: Holiday Party Edition

Five tips for holiday office parties Holiday party season is upon us, PR girls! While I love any reason to don a few sparkly things, eat some free food & hang out a while, office holiday parties should be handled with care. 1. Dress appropriately. For the most part, your normal workplace dress code still applies at holiday parties, but you can have a little fun with it now. Make sure that your outfit is of appropriate length if it’s a dress or skirt and isn’t too low-cut or revealing. Be sure to err on the conservative side, especially if alcohol will be available. Make your outfit festive by opting for a…

  • The Post-Grad Struggle

Is struggling in your career a completely normal, run-of-the-mill thing? I hate to even admit this, being a Type A person, but lately I’ve been feeling a bit like I’m struggling at work. It’s a mix of “Argh! I don’t know what I’m doing!” and “Why won’t you let me do my job!” served up with a huge side of anxiety about life in general. While I don’t like admitting that I feel a little overwhelmed and a bit lost, I feel that opening up about it is a good way to figure it out, especially since I know I’m not alone in it. I like to think of it as…

  • Confessions of a Chronic Procrastinator

Confession: I’m a chronic procrastinator. It’s a serious problem. Sometimes I wish there were meetings I could attend where I could connect with other procrastinators to support each other as we struggle with our incessant need to delay everything. I realize that I’d probably try to find a way to delay that, too, though. I blame it in part on my background in journalism. Working under pressure and on deadline is like second nature to me, so when I don’t have a deadline lighting a fire under me, I don’t tend to feel any particular need to get things done.

  • PR Girl 101: Design Your Day

Is it just me or is the Monday after a long week just the worst? Whether you’re still recovering from a tryptophan-induced coma or coming down from a shopping-fueled high, today – and the next few weeks – are shaping up to be a rough uphill battle. For PR girls, it’s important to always be on top of things – one of the most difficult things when you can’t quite get yourself motivated. My preferred way to combat an insanely busy, struggle-filled period of time is head on. By head on, I mean meticulously planning & scheduling every little thing I have to do between my start and finish lines. But,…

  • PR Girl 101: Prep for a Successful Week

Let’s be honest: PR girls rarely have a boring week. Whether it’s a project coming together for a client, a full schedule of events or a pitching to new clients day in and day out, there’s always something to do. Even though we know that a full schedule is really just part of the job description, we still find ourselves surprised once in a while when a crazy, hectic, stressful week pops up. Sometimes an uncontrollable crisis is truly a surprise – springing from unforeseen circumstances or things beyond our control – but more often than not, it’s of our own doing. We fail to plan, we get overwhelmed, we procrastinate,…

  • Cope with a stress-filled Manic Monday

Ah Monday. Everyone dreads Mondays. Back to work, a whole week ahead and, often, a whole lot of meetings, tasks and projects are staring right at you. • Work-Life Balance: A Key to Your Mental Health

In honor of World Mental Health Day today, I think it’s important to take a few minutes & discuss a topic that many struggle with daily: a healthy work-life balance. In any field, maintaining a healthy balance between career & personal life can be challenging. In PR, which is ranked as the sixth most stressful career according to CareerCast, that balance is crucial to a healthy mental state and your happiness.
